WHAT TO PREPARE/BRING:

– To complete the audition form and choose an audition time slot, click here: Dogfight Audition Form

– Prepare 32 bars (or approximately 1-minute) from a musical theatre song in the style of the show (please no songs from the actual production). Please bring marked sheet music for the provided accompanist. No acapella songs or music tracks will be used for in-person auditions.

– Bring a list of all anticipated rehearsal conflicts from January 5 to January 30. No conflicts will be accepted from February 2 through the end of the run. An excessive amount of conflicts will affect our ability to cast you in the show. Please keep conflicts to a minimum.

– Attach a headshot (if available) and resume of recent theatre experience to your audition sheet, or bring them with you to the audition. If you do not have a headshot or resume, please do not let that stop you from auditioning! We can take a photo and get additional information when you arrive!

VIDEO AUDITIONS:

Video auditions will be accepted until October 25 at 11:59 PM. There is a field on the audition form where you can upload your 1-minute video. Please ensure your video captures you from the waist up so we can see your full interpretation of the song and not just hear your vocals! Recorded accompaniment is permitted on video auditions.

REHEARSALS:

– Rehearsals begin on Sunday, January 5 and will typically be Sundays from 1:00-5:00 PM and Mondays-Fridays from 7:00-10:00 PM at OCTA.
– Tech Week will run from February 2-6, with rehearsal times TBD.

ABOUT THE SHOW:

On November 21, 1963, the eve of their deployment to a small but growing conflict in Southeast Asia, three young Marines set out for one final boys’ night of debauchery, partying, and maybe a little trouble. But when Corporal Eddie Birdlace meets Rose, an awkward and idealistic waitress whom he enlists to win a cruel bet with his fellow recruits, she rewrites the rules of the game and teaches him the power of love and compassion, and the unexpected lessons that can come from a game gone wrong.

CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS:

EDDIE BIRDLACE (male-presenting; 18-25) – A Marine private first class. He is well respected and a natural leader amongst his comrades. Initially a hothead; a cocky smooth talker. He eventually sheds his brash exterior when he falls for Rose. Vocal range A2-A4. (THIS ROLE WILL REQUIRE THE ACTOR TO HAVE A SHORT/MILITARY STYLE HAIRCUT!)

ROSE FENNY (female-presenting; 18-25) – A diner waitress who dreams of life as a musician. She is a naturally shy girl, naive of the world around her. Becomes smitten with Birdlace and discovers a lot about her self-respect and confidence along the way. Vocal range G3-E5.

BERNSTEIN (male-presenting; 18-25) – A Marine private first class and Birdlace’s good friend. A bit nerdy and very inexperienced with the opposite sex. Vocal range B2-B4. (THIS ROLE WILL REQUIRE THE ACTOR TO HAVE A SHORT/MILITARY STYLE HAIRCUT!)

BOLAND (male-presenting; 18-25) – A Marine private first class and Birdlace’s closest friend. A poor Southern cad, he is the most vocal supporter of the dogfight and fairly crude in his behavior and language. Vocal range C2-Bb4. (THIS ROLE WILL REQUIRE THE ACTOR TO HAVE A SHORT/MILITARY STYLE HAIRCUT!)

MARCY (male-presenting; 25-35) – Boland’s date for the dogfight. She is a nearly toothless and homely prostitute. Crass and brash, but sneaky and cunning. Vocal range F#3-Eb4.

MAMA (female-presenting; 40-50) – The owner of the local diner. She is unamused by the Marines’ antics and protective of her daughter, Rose.

ENSEMBLE (4-6 ensemble members of various ages) – Marines, bus passengers, singers, hippies, etc. (IF CAST IN A MARINE ENSEMBLE ROLE, THE ACTOR WILL REQUIRE A SHORT/MILITARY STYLE HAIRCUT!)

Regarding casting/ages: Ages are included for reference on how the characters will be perceived and not necessarily the ages of the actors. All characters are open to actors of any ethnicity, ability, age, and gender identity.
