Peter and the Starcatcher

Peter and the Starcatcher

November 5-21, 2021 – Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m., Sundays at 2 p.m.

by Rick Elice

Directed by Jessica Franz Martin

The story of Peter Pan is legendary. How about the story of an orphan boy who becomes the legend himself? This Tony-winning play takes the familiar story and breathes new life into Neverland, the pirate-filled seas, and the mysterious stars. Written by Rick Elice, this delightfully charming story exudes imagination and inventiveness with actors playing over 100 roles, pirates and unlikely heroes included. Journey with Peter and the Starcatcher through times of greed, duty and friendship.

OCTA Supports TCF! The Theatre Community Fund of KC is taking donations during OCTA’s run of PETER AND THE STARCATCHER. TCHKC was founded in 2020 during the height of the pandemic to provide support to local theatre workers through our food bank, to volunteer help for needs that require boots on the ground, and to provide direct financial relief. Our food bank has over 100 recipients and the Emergency Grant Program has awarded over 6k to local artists. TCF is a lightning rod for the generosity that courses through our community, opening up access to that help to anyone who needs it. Read more about TCF here.

Items needed: Toothpaste (no brushes), mouthwash, deodorant, shampoo & conditioner, sulfate free hair products, bar soap, toilet paper, hand & body lotion, laundry detergent.

Announcing the cast!

Amanda Bass (Captain Robert Falcon Scott) is absolutely thrilled to be back on the OCTA stage again. She was most recently seen in OCTA’s 2019 production of A Flea in Her Ear. Some other favorite roles include Claire in Proof and Arlene in Getting Out. Love and appreciation to the talented cast and crew, the OCTA family, and a special thanks to Mom and Dad for their endless and unconditional support.

Meghann Deveroux (Mrs. Bumbrake / Teacher) is beyond thrilled to return to the stage after a year and a half pandemic hiatus. Favorite OCTA roles include Mistress Quickly (Merry Wives of Windsor), Lucienne (A Flea in Her Ear), and Marianne (Sense & Sensibility). Heartfelt thanks go out to her friends for being super, her family for making the drive, Jessica for the opportunity, and the audience for supporting local theatre once again!

Tracy Fox (Lord Leonard Aster) is thrilled to be at OCTA again with all these talented friends! She thoroughly enjoyed performing these many years, most recently seen in July at the White Theatre as Grace in Annie. Other roles of note: Mrs. Henry Dashwood (Sense & Sensibility), Queen Aggravain (Once Upon a Mattress), Desiree (A Little Night Music), and Sally (Follies). Thanks to Jessica for continuing the Martin family tradition of casting me as a man!

Gracie King (Boy / Peter) is so excited to be making her OCTA debut! She’d like to thank Andrew and all of her family and friends.

Don Leonard (Alf) What a long, strange trip it’s been getting back on stage. Don appeared at OCTA as John Dashwood in Sense and Sensibility and as Matthew in Anne of Green Gables, among many other shows. He is regularly on stage at The White Theatre, and Theater in the Park. In fact, the last time on stage was in the TTIP production of The Wizard of Oz as the Wizard himself. Enjoy! TTFN.

David Martin (Black Stache) is super thrilled to be back performing live theatre again! To come back with this show and this group of amazing people AND to be directed by his awesome wife is just the icing this cake needed. OCTA patrons will hopefully remember that David directed the last show here before the world shut down (Merry Wives of Windsor). It probably wasn’t our fault. Shoutout to SF!

Megan McCranie (Grempkin / Mack / Sánchez / Fighting Prawn) is thrilled to be sailing with the OCTA crew (and you!) for this big adventure! She graduated from Hollins University, where she had the pleasure of playing Goodman in Men on Boats, Black Stache in Peter and the Starcatcher, and the Pilot in her senior thesis performance of Grounded. In KC she’s made appearances with the Barn Players as Mrs. Gascoyne in Curious Incident and Kate Murphey in Titanic.

Hewleek McKoy (Ted) makes his debut at OCTA today, having been doing Kansas City community theatre since 2015 in roles such as Bride in Titanic (The Barn), Zeke in High School Musical 1 & 2 (TIP), Amos in Big Fish (Faust Theatre), and Walter Raleigh in Something Rotten (The J). Hewleek graduated with his BFA from Emporia State in 2019. Hewleek is excited to bring some positivity to the community after a year of uncertainty.

Nicole Olson (Prentiss) is thrilled to make her debut on the OCTA stage! By day, Nicole works for the Foundation at the hospital in Lawrence and recently obtained her MBA through Baker University. Previous roles include “Mom” (Leaving Iowa), “The Matron” (Holmes and Watson), and “Laura Wingfield” (The Glass Menagerie) at Theatre Lawrence. Nicole would like to especially thank her friends and family for always supporting and encouraging her to pursue this passion! “Supers FTW!”

Fran Opheim (Molly Aster) is so excited to be making her OCTA debut in Peter and the Starcatcher! She was last seen on the KC stage as Truly Scrumptious in Theatre In the Park’s Production of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Fran would like to thank her family for their undying support, and her Indian Hills Middle School theatre students for inspiring her every day. Welcome back to the theatre!

Evan C. Phillips (Bill Slank / Hawking Clam) is a struggling writer with a BFA in Comedic Arts from Emerson College. His writing earned him two Evvy awards for his sketch Sometimes A Fantasy and his memoir Tales from the Looney Bin. He was also nominated for his original TV pilot Swashbucklers and his standup. His greatest professional credit is answering phones at the Funny Or Die offices. He also acts sometimes, like right now.

Matthew Runnells-Rebol (Smee) expresses thanks to Megan McCranie for introducing him to Peter and the Starcatcher. He is thrilled to finally be a part of it in a space as special as OCTA. He has graced stages all over the KC area for several years and is excited to be back after a year-long involuntary hiatus.
